Ageing in motion

How bodies move with age, and before death.

The same people measured every four years in the US Health and Retirement Study, 2006–2022. Pick a measure to see where people sit at each age and how it falls in the years before death.

Average change per year–within the same people, over 4 years
Tracking over 4 years–correlation of a person's two values
Mortality hazard per SD–adjusted for age and sex, 95% CI

By age: median and the middle 80%

MenWomen

MenWomen

About these numbers

Physical measures from HRS waves 8–16, adults 50 and over, weighted by the physical-measure weights. Age curves are cross-sectional percentiles; change and tracking follow the same people across two visits four years apart.

Only aggregate statistics are published. Any group of fewer than 50 people is left out.
