Growth versus scarring

The same stressor builds capacity in some people and erodes it in others. Which measurable conditions separate the two, and can an intervention move someone from one to the other?

Why it matters

If the conditions are known and measurable, stress exposure stops being only a risk to reduce and becomes something to shape: dose, control, recovery and support can be changed even when the stressor cannot.

What exists

  • An extended allostasis model with a growth window, outcome classes and an interactive simulator (Growth or scarring).
  • A catalogue of interventions mapped to the model term each one acts on.
  • Cohorts with dated stressors and repeated physiology: HRS (life events and repeated physical measures), MIDUS (laboratory stress challenge, daily diaries with cortisol), ELSA.

A first step

Simulate people from the model, sample them as a cohort would (dated events plus visits every two to four years, or a laboratory challenge repeated a year apart), and find which design can tell growth from resilience at all.
